Alexis Ohanian has long championed women’s athletics, but his dedication grew significantly after his daughter, Olympia, entered his life.
Recently, the co-founder of Reddit reminisced about a touching experience from the inaugural Athlos NYC event, a female-centric track and field initiative he was instrumental in creating. Central to this memory is a heartfelt interaction with Olympia.
Ohanian shared a picture on social media featuring Olympia in her silver crown before the event started. This treasured photo now adorns his office.
“I reflect on this image frequently,” he commented. “A cherished moment before the @athlos festivities began; I hope Jr. carries this memory for a long time. And this was just the beginning…”
Ohanian: A Strong Proponent for Women’s Sports
For Alexis, being an advocate for women’s athletics is personal, not just professional. His commitment began in 2019, inspired by watching Olympia enthusiastically support during the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
This pivotal moment motivated him to enhance opportunities in women’s sports, resulting in investments such as Angel City FC and supporting events like Athlos NYC.
Beyond his business endeavors, Ohanian treasures his close relationship with Olympia, making the most of their time together. However, as a busy entrepreneur, he sometimes finds himself away from home, a topic he discussed on his Business Dad podcast.
Parting Ways is More Challenging
Ohanian shared an emotional moment about the first time he had to leave Olympia for a trip, noting how she began to truly grasp the concept of goodbyes. “It felt like an extra hug. I thought, ‘Wow, this is tough,'” he expressed.
Now, with Olympia’s photo framed in his office, he draws comfort from the thought that she is always with him in spirit. As he strives to create a brighter future for women’s sports, it is evident that his greatest motivation is the little girl who brought joy to Athlos NYC donning a silver crown.
