Craig Melvin’s Dramatic Evolution After Hoda Kotb’s Exit

The Transformation Of Hoda Kotb's Today Show Replacement, Craig Melvin

Craig Melvin’s Challenging Upbringing

Born in 1979 in Columbia, South Carolina, Craig Melvin faced numerous hardships during his early years. His father, Lawrence Melvin, had a troubled past, having been born while his mother was incarcerated. As Craig grew up, his father’s battle with addiction resulted in his absence during key moments of his life.

In his 2021 memoir, “Pops: Learning to Be a Son and a Father,” Craig opened up about their strained relationship, revealing that his friends nicknamed his father “Ghost” due to his unpredictable presence. “That nickname really bothered me,” Melvin noted in the book (via Today). “Most of my friends had their fathers around; I felt like mine was just a phantom, often absent.” His father’s gambling problems also led to financial struggles, compelling Craig’s mother, Betty Jo Melvin, to work multiple jobs to support the family.

During a 2021 discussion with “Today,” Craig emphasized that his mother was his true inspiration. “It’s tough because while my book is titled ‘Pops,’ for the majority of my life, she had to be both Mom and Dad,” he explained. “I genuinely wouldn’t be where I am today without her unwavering support.”
