Eddie Murphy Voices Displeasure with David Spade for Offensive Joke

Eddie Murphy hits out at David Spade for racist joke

Eddie Murphy has reignited his feud with David Spade over a joke made on Saturday Night Live back in 1995.

Spade, 59, ridiculed Murphy’s career following the flop of “Vampire in Brooklyn,” leading to a prolonged grudge between the two.

Revisiting the Controversial Joke

During the “Weekend Update” segment, Spade targeted Murphy.

“Look kids, it’s a falling star. Make a wish,” Spade quipped.

Murphy, now 63, raised the issue on the New York Times’ “The Interview” podcast, describing the joke as a personal affront with possible racial undertones.

Murphy, a former “SNL” cast member from 1980 to 1984, perceived the joke as a low blow.

“My career? Seriously? A wisecrack about my career? That felt like a cheap shot. And, in my opinion, somewhat racist,” he remarked.

He also chastised the show’s producers for letting the joke air, emphasizing his significant contribution to the show’s success.

In his memoir, “Almost Interesting,” Spade recounted Murphy’s enraged reaction and his furious phone call.

David Spade, who the hell do you think you are? Honestly? Who. The. Hell. Coming after ME?? You fool! I’m off-limits, got it?” Spade acknowledged feeling remorseful about the incident.

Murphy kept his distance from “SNL” for more than 30 years post this event, but eventually made a comeback as host in 2019, joined by Dave Chapelle, Chris Rock, and Tracy Morgan.

Reflecting on the episode, Murphy acknowledged that things had ultimately been reconciled.

“I’m on good terms with David Spade. Good terms with Lorne Michaels. I returned to ‘SNL’,” Murphy concluded.

“I’m at peace with everyone. It’s all about love.”
