Actor Eric Dane is currently facing a difficult battle after being diagnosed with ALS. Recognized for his roles as Dr. Sloan in Grey’s Anatomy and Cal Jacobs in Euphoria, he shared his thoughts in a recent interview on ‘Good Morning America’ about his situation.
This marks the first occasion he has publicly addressed this issue. In a statement last April in People magazine, he revealed that he had received a devastating diagnosis: amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), which is a progressive and untreatable condition.
“Every morning, I wake up and immediately think about this being my reality,” he admitted, appearing visibly distressed. The host remarked: “It’s not a dream,” to which the 52-year-old actor responded sadly: “I don’t see this as the conclusion of my journey. I sense that my story isn’t finished.”
Understanding ALS
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a condition that affects the neurons in the brain, spinal cord, and brainstem that control voluntary muscle movement.
The motor neurons deteriorate or perish, leading to their inability to transmit signals to the muscles. This results in progressive muscle weakness, cramps, and loss of movement in the arms, legs, and body. The condition is relentless in its progression. Eventually, if the respiratory muscles fail, it can result in severe breathing difficulties.
Currently, no cure exists for this illness, despite ongoing research efforts. Up to this point, a breakthrough remains elusive.
