In a recent opinion piece in The New York Times, George Clooney is joining other voices in Hollywood urging Joe Biden to reconsider his position as the Democratic nominee for president in 2024. Despite hosting a successful fundraiser for Biden earlier in the year, Clooney’s perspective shifted after Biden’s lackluster performance in a debate with Donald Trump.
“I love Joe Biden. As a senator. As a vice president, and as president,” Clooney expressed. “I see him as a friend, and I have faith in him, his character, and his values. He has triumphed in many battles over the past four years.”
However, Clooney remarked, “But the battle against time is one he cannot win. None of us can. It’s heartbreaking to say, but the Joe Biden I saw recently was not the same energetic figure of the past. He wasn’t even the Biden of 2020. He resembled the man we saw at the debate.”
The actor highlighted the Democratic party’s fear of a second Trump term leading them to overlook Biden’s aging. He highlighted Biden’s post-debate interview as a turning point in his opinion that Biden should not lead the Democratic ticket.
Clooney remarks on Biden’s challenge against time
“This is solely about age,” Clooney asserted. “And unfortunately, it’s irreversible. Winning in November with Biden as our candidate is unlikely. Moreover, losing the House and Senate seems inevitable. This sentiment is echoed by numerous senators, congress members, and governors I’ve spoken to privately. Each one, despite their public stance.”
Clooney concluded, “Joe Biden is a hero; he defended democracy in 2020. We need him to do it again in 2024.”
Clooney, along with other Hollywood figures like Rob Reiner, Stephen King, and Michael Moore, is advocating for Biden to step aside as the Democratic nominee. Moore described Biden’s debate performance as “the cruelest form of elder abuse I’ve ever been forced to watch” on his “Rumble” podcast.
Following the debate, Biden reaffirmed in an interview with ABC News that he has no intentions of withdrawing from the presidential race.
