Hollywood A-listers Make Their Mark in Colombian Soccer: Reynolds, Longoria, Upton, and McElhenney Join the Scene

Ryan Reynolds, Eva Longoria, Kate Upton and Rob McElhenney arrive in Colombian soccer: confirmed by La Equidad

The club La Equidad in Bogotá has announced a new ownership under the Tylis-Porter group, taking over from La Equidad Seguros which previously owned the team. This transition marks a significant development as it introduces foreign investment into local soccer. Notable figures including actors Ryan Reynolds, Eva Longoria, and Rob McElhenney, along with model Kate Upton, baseball star Justin Verlander, and ex-basketball player Shawn Marion, are also involved, drawing considerable attention.

While details are still emerging, it is understood that the management approach used for Wrexham FC in Wales, also under this group, will be applied here, which aims to foster greater connections with regional soccer teams, including Mexico’s Necaxa. Changes may be anticipated for the Colombian club, especially regarding its branding, which is closely tied to the insurance company that founded it in the 1980s.

Despite La Equidad’s limited success in terms of titles—winning the Ascenso in 2006 and Copa Colombia in 2008—the team has demonstrated remarkable resilience by staying in the top division and occasionally competing internationally. However, due to low fan support and media presence, discussions about a potential rebranding are underway to improve its future prospects.

Who are the new owners of La Equidad in Colombia?

On January 16, 2025, The Athletic reported on exciting developments surrounding La Equidad, revealing ownership changes involving notable international figures. A consortium from the U.S. led by real estate investor Al Tylis and Sam Porter from Club Necaxa has acquired the team, with backing from stars like Ryan Reynolds, Rob McElhenney, and Eva Longoria.

La Equidad, known as ‘Los Aseguradores’ for its insurance company roots, is based in Bogotá, where its stadium, Estadio Metropolitano de Techo, accommodates 10,000 fans. The club, which finished 13th out of 20 teams in the 2024 league phase, was established in 1982 by its namesake insurance company.

The acquisition involves the consortium securing over 99% ownership of La Equidad, valued at more than $30 million according to sources, although local figures might suggest a lower amount.

The official announcement from La Equidad expressed joy and celebration regarding the sale, stating: “The North American investment group has successfully acquired our club, with approval from DIMAYOR (Division Mayor del Futbol Profesional Colombiano). This partnership launches a sustainable growth strategy for the team. Al Tylis and Sam Porter will serve as Co-Chairmen of our Board alongside Nicolas Maya, while President Carlos Mario Zuluaga will continue leading the club with passion.”

The new owners’ commitment extends to investing in essential areas, particularly for youth and women’s teams. The statement also highlighted the extensive sports experience of the ownership group, which includes notable figures like Eva Longoria, Justin Verlander, and Kate Upton.

Further details were provided about Tylis and Porter: “Al Tylis is the owner and managing partner of the DC Pickleball team and co-owner of Club Necaxa, while Sam Porter has served as Chief Strategy Officer of DC United (MLS) and was a board member of Swansea City AFC (Premier League).”

Al Tylis remarked: “Joining this great club is an honor… We aim to enhance every facet of the club for a lasting impact,” while Sam Porter expressed enthusiasm over the potential for La Equidad’s bright future in Bogotá.

For now, while La Equidad continues as it is, the new economic investments are expected to transform its status within Colombian football.
