How Mark Cuban’s $6 Million Windfall Led to a Hilarious Drunk Dial With American Airlines

Mark Cuban drunk-dialed American Airlines to buy a lifetime pass after selling his first company for $6 million

In the early 1990s, after selling his software company for $6 million, entrepreneur Mark Cuban made a spontaneous investment that has since become a notable part of his story.

Instead of spending on flashy items, Cuban opted for a lifetime air travel plan, a decision that has become legendary.

After the sale of his startup, MicroSolutions, Cuban took some friends out to celebrate. Fueled by excitement and drinks, he found himself wanting to secure air travel for himself.

Not realizing it was an option, he called American Airlines that very night, slurring his words and asking, “Do you guys sell lifetime passes?” Amazingly, they did.

He acquired an AAirpass for $125,000, granting him and a guest unlimited first-class travel for life with the airline.

In today’s money, that would amount to about $300,000. Over time, Cuban enhanced his pass and generously allowed friends and family to use his travel benefits.

Ultimately, he passed the privilege on to his father, and after his father’s passing, he transferred it to a close friend.

Cuban’s Major Indulgence

While this AAirpass marked one of Cuban‘s early luxuries, it was far from the last.

In 1999, after selling Broadcast.com to Yahoo for $5.7 billion, he made another significant purchase: a Gulfstream G5 jet for $40 million, which remains known as the priciest e-commerce purchase in history.

The jet represented more than luxury; it was a way for Cuban to maximize his time, which he values highly.

Despite his lavish spending, Cuban claims he hasn’t changed much, stating, “Other than the plane, I’m still a slob. Not a lot has changed.”
