Jennifer Lopez opens up about her relationships: I've never been beaten, but I have been abused

Jennifer Lopez emotionally disclosed being subjected to abuse by previous partners, clarifying that she was never physically assaulted by them, as she navigates through divorce proceedings with Ben Affleck.

The singer announced her separation from the renowned actor, famous for his portrayal of Batman in the DCEU and roles in Pearl Harbor, citing irreconcilable differences, revealing that they had been living separately since April.

As she gears up to portray a survivor of domestic abuse in her upcoming film, Unstoppable, the role holds personal significance to her due to her past encounters with certain partners.

“There were individuals in my life who professed ‘I love you’,” Lopez disclosed in the 2024 documentary The Greatest Love Story Never Told. “But their actions didn’t align with the essence of ‘love’.

“Being handled roughly and mistreated in that manner is not enjoyable. Thankfully, I’ve never been physically harmed in a relationship, but I’ve experienced being treated disrespectfully and roughly.”

Lopez‘s list of former partners includes Sean Combs, Alex Rodriguez, Tommy Mottola, Ojani Noa, Cris Judd, Marc Anthony, and Affleck; however, she did not specify the individual who mistreated her in this instance.

The singer known as Jenny from the Block is in the process of divorcing Affleck, whom she tied the knot with in 2022 after commencing their relationship in 2020, following the deterioration of their relationship that led them to spend important occasions apart.

Affleck went as far as moving out of their shared residence and relocating to a secluded property, despite being involved as a producer on The Greatest Love Story Never Told. This development, though somewhat surprising to fans, caught many off guard due to the timing of the documentary.

Lopez showcases her latest film

The 55-year-old American icon attended the Toronto International Film Festival to promote her movie, engaging in a Q&A session with her enthusiastic and supportive fans.

Portraying the character of Anthony Robles’ mother, the NCAA champion wrestler born with a single leg, she acknowledged that Judy Robles’ battle with domestic abuse resonated with her own experiences, leading her to connect with the role.

“Upon reading the script,” Lopez addressed the audience, “I felt that many women, myself included, could empathize with the challenges she faced in her life.

“The story, being of Latino origin and incredibly inspiring, captivated me. I found it extremely compelling.

“Having a conversation with her made me realize that, in a strange way, despite our differences and disparate life journeys, at our core, we were both primarily mothers. And beyond that, we shared comparable struggles.”
