It’s clear that Super Bowl LIX did not go as planned for the Kansas City Chiefs.
Patrick Mahomes and his teammates aimed to make history by clinching a third consecutive Super Bowl victory, while both he and coach Andy Reid sought to enhance their legendary legacies.
Unfortunately, the Chiefs’ aspirations were quickly undermined when they squared off against the Philadelphia Eagles. The team displayed a lackluster performance, with Mahomes facing relentless pressure throughout the game.
Ultimately, he committed three turnovers, and Reid struggled to make any effective in-game changes. Consequently, the Chiefs suffered a significant defeat, and numerous statistics highlighted their disappointing performance.
Kendrick Lamar Outshined the Chiefs
A particularly telling statistic relates to Kendrick Lamar and his halftime show.
The artist stunned the audience and reportedly covered more than 145 yards during his performance, which is roughly three times the rushing total of the Chiefs as noted by USA Today’s Cory Woodroof.
Moreover, Lamar’s performance extended over 13 minutes, while the Chiefs held possession for just 10:01 in the first half.
In that brief span, they managed a mere 23 total offensive yards and one first down, averaging just 1.2 yards per play. In contrast, the Eagles amassed 179 yards, secured 12 first downs, and averaged 4.6 yards per play, building a commanding 24-0 lead.
By the game’s conclusion, the Chiefs recorded only 11 rushing attempts, of which merely seven were planned plays. The remaining four were scrambles by Mahomes, who gained 25 yards.
It’s also worth mentioning that the Chiefs did not even cross midfield until fewer than three minutes remained in the third quarter, leaving many Kansas City fans wondering if they should continue watching.
