During a press event for her film, which is now available on Prime Video, she recounted her experience to PEOPLE magazine: “It literally haunts me. So this friend of mine, who I didn’t really know very well but was a very serious, proper actress, asked me to give her an award. But I’d never been to an awards ceremony, so I thought it was like a ‘roast’. So I got up and roasted her.” Here, she referred to the American tradition of humorously teasing someone in a light-hearted manner, known as a ‘roast’.
Witherspoon went on to describe how the event was “British,” “elegant,” and “classy”, suggesting that she completely misjudged the appropriate tone for her speech. She humorously recalled mentioning an incident related to “laser hair removal”, while Ferrell chuckled at her story.
Reflections on Her Misjudgment
While Reese Witherspoon did not disclose the name of the actress, she confirmed that their relationship ended due to the incident. “We’re not friends anymore. I’m not kidding, we’re not friends anymore. I don’t think she likes me anymore. I thought it was really funny and just, I had the wrong audience. It was pretty bad. Yeah. I’m not kidding, she doesn’t talk to me anymore,” she remarked, laughing but with a hint of regret.
Witherspoon stars alongside Ferrell in ‘You’re Cordially Invited’, a comedy of errors revolving around two characters who mistakenly reserve the same location for their respective weddings. In a playful nod to her past embarrassment, there is a scene in the film where her character delivers an awkward speech reminiscent of the one that cost her a friendship.
