Selena Gomez used humor to comment on the ongoing Taylor Swift-Donald Trump controversy during the 2024 Emmy Awards, making a reference to Swift’s “childless cat lady” remark while endorsing Kamala Harris.
Presenting at the well-known award show with Martin Short and Steve Martin on Sunday, September 15, Gomez stood out with her witty delivery.
“Let me just say,” Gomez joked while referencing Swift. “I am honored to share the stage with two individuals who aren’t too far from being childless cat ladies.”
This jab is based on remarks from JD Vance, a potential vice-president with Trump, who gained attention for suggesting that the US was being controlled by “childless cat ladies” leading miserable lives, trying to spread their unhappiness.
The quote gained more traction when Vance joined Trump’s Republican ticket, right as Swift brought it up while announcing her endorsement of Harris following their ABC debate.
“I’ve done my research, and I’ve made my choice,” Swift expressed on Instagram. “You can do your own research and make your decision. And, particularly for first-time voters: don’t forget to register to vote!”
“I find early voting much more convenient. I’ll include links for registration and early voting information in my story. With love and optimism, Taylor Swift. Childless Cat Lady.”
Since then, Trump has launched a campaign against Swift on his social media platforms, even stating his dislike for her on Truth Social, while over 300,000 people have registered to vote following links shared by the 34-year-old in her post.
