In a disturbing twist, the Los Angeles Police Department reported arrests of individuals impersonating firefighters to loot properties, as thefts have escalated during this crisis.
Some landlords have taken advantage of the situation, increasing rental prices excessively for the many displaced individuals, with one real estate agent revealing a jump from $13,000 to $23,000 per month.
Record-breaking temperature increase
For several years, climate experts have warned that exceeding a 1.5 degrees Celsius increase in average global temperatures would be crucial for climate change mitigation, a threshold that had yet to be crossed.
However, according to the European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service, 2024 marks the first recorded year surpassing this limit compared to pre-industrial levels. Notably, every one of the hottest years on record has occurred in the last decade, with only two continents escaping their hottest years.
