Pentatonix, now featuring Scott Hoying, Mitch Grassi, Kirstin Maldonado, Kevin Olusola, and Matt Sallee, once included Avi Kaplan, who was integral to their success when they won “The Sing-Off” in 2011. Serving as the bass vocalist, Kaplan added a deep resonance to their covers and played multiple instruments, showcasing his versatility.
However, Kaplan made the tough choice to depart from the group in 2017, sharing an emotional farewell message online. He expressed gratitude for his experiences with Pentatonix and hinted at the hope of performing together again in the future, although that collaboration has yet to materialize. Following his exit, Matt Sallee took over Kaplan’s role, leading Pentatonix through its evolving journey.
Despite leaving, Kaplan remains active and has not faded from the spotlight.
Avi Kaplan wanted more time with his family
Prior to his final performance with Pentatonix, Avi Kaplan cited a need for more personal time, particularly to connect with family. In a poignant Facebook video from May 2017, he spoke of the challenges that came with the group’s success, which often prevented him from seeing loved ones or enjoying nature when he felt overwhelmed.
During a July 2017 interview, Kaplan elaborated on the strenuous touring schedule with Pentatonix, emphasizing his excitement for the freedom of pursuing his own music career, where he could control his breaks and artistic direction.
Avi Kaplan is still dedicated to his music career
Avi Kaplan has continued to create music since leaving Pentatonix and has shared new tunes with his folk band, Avriel & the Sequoias. Initially worried about how fans would react to his solo work, he has been pleasantly surprised by the positive response.
In 2022, Kaplan released his debut full-length album, “Floating on a Dream,” and embarked on a tour. By early 2023, he reflected on his milestones and gratitude towards his fans. Looking ahead, 2024 brought more successes, including a headlining performance in Istanbul and the release of his new EP “Feel Alright.” In November, he hinted at more music and a tour for 2025.
