John Cassaday, a notable figure in the comic book industry, unfortunately passed away early on Monday morning at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York. His sister, Robin K. Cassaday, shared the news on social media after he was hospitalized on September 4.
In a Facebook update, Robin mentioned that “his condition remained stable overall, with his organs and heart functioning, but attention was mainly focused on his brain. An MRI was scheduled for Saturday to clarify his situation further.”
Sadly, after six days in the hospital, the 52-year-old’s condition did not improve, leading to his passing. His sister wrote, “My little brother John passed away at 1:51 am this Tuesday. We would appreciate prayers for my mom and me.”
Honoring John Cassaday, a Renowned Cartoonist
Cassaday was celebrated for his work in the comic industry, having received multiple Eisner awards—often referred to as the Oscars of comics. His impressive portfolio included collaborations on ‘Astonishing X-Men’ with Joss Whedon, ‘Planetary’ with Warren Ellis, ‘Captain America’ with John Ney Rieber, and ‘Star Wars’ with Jason Aaron, along with various projects for Marvel and DC Comics.
A native of Fort Worth, Texas, he created his debut work, ‘Ghost’, published by Dark Horse Comics in 1996. Self-taught, Cassaday drew inspiration from NC Wyeth and the traditional imagery of Pulp magazine culture. He also ventured into audiovisual projects, including work on television news shows.
