Haven revealed to the Daily Mail that he holds no memories of his mother scolding him or Jolie but does recall distressing encounters with his father, stating, “Voight was incredibly tough on our mother.” Following their parents’ split, Haven recounted Voight’s absence, noting, “Though he lived nearby, we would only see him on holidays or school events; he never fulfilled his role as a father.”
Jolie’s relationship with Voight soured, leading her to forbid him from their lives after he claimed publicly that she had serious mental health issues. In contrast, Haven managed a slightly better rapport; after their mother’s passing, he recounted how Voight left a thoughtful voicemail message offering condolences to him and Jolie. His mother’s death was hard on him

He added that their mother was diligent in ensuring they completed their schoolwork, becoming a steadfast figure amidst the chaos brought on by their father’s actions.
Despite their challenging childhood, Haven recognized the positives, sharing with Marie Claire that his mother’s struggles with their father cultivated a desire in him to help those less fortunate, stating, “I empathize deeply with abandoned women and children.” Thus, while their upbringing was marred by difficulties, Haven hoped that Bertrand found solace in knowing her legacy continued through his advocacy.
He dropped everything during Angelina and Brad Pitt’s divorce
During the challenging divorce between Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, her brother James Haven stood by her side. On the “90who10” podcast, Haven expressed that his initial focus was to protect Jolie and her children during this tumultuous period, stating, “That’s where it all started… my nieces and nephews.” Aware that the children were entering crucial developmental stages, he committed to being present for both Jolie and the kids, saying, “I want to be there for them or for her — whatever she’s going through.”
Haven’s support turned into a full-time role as he became a live-in caretaker for Jolie’s children during this hard time. Although it stemmed from familial love, it’s noteworthy that he received a portion of Jolie’s earnings due to a financial agreement made by their mother.
