Since its premiere in 2010, “Sister Wives” has become a staple on TLC, following the complex dynamics of Kody Brown’s polygamous family. Now entering its 19th season, the show continues to captivate viewers with its myriad conflicts, which often overshadow its original premise.
Despite only being legally wed to one of his wives, the arrangements within the family are described as spiritual unions. Kody’s intention to bring a positive light to polygamy may have backfired, as ongoing scandals have kept his family in the tabloids for all the wrong reasons.
While some issues stem from Kody’s own choices, others arise from unforeseen hardship. Below, we examine the significant challenges and tragedies he has faced.
The loss of three wives in just over a year
In early November 2021, Kody Brown was still married to all four of his wives. Fast forward to January 2023, and only one remained.
His third wife, Christine Brown, initiated the changes when she left after 26 years, frustrated by Kody’s lack of support during their daughter Ysabel’s scoliosis surgery. Shortly thereafter, second wife Janelle followed suit, indicating she felt forced to choose between her children and the family.
Kody’s first wife, Meri, ended their relationship officially just a month later, following a long period of platonic engagement. Reflecting on the situation, Kody expressed the challenges they faced and acknowledged his role in the breakdown. “I could have done a lot better,” he stated while hoping for continued friendship with his former wives.
Financial troubles force the sale of his Flagstaff mansion
Following the departure of three wives within 14 months, Kody Brown’s finances took a hit. In 2024, he and his remaining wife, Robyn, listed their Flagstaff mansion for $1.6 million.
Just weeks before the sale, Kody had sought permits for renovations, indicating plans for upgrades in late 2023. The expansive home, previously purchased for $890,000 in 2019, had undergone various improvements. However, shifting family dynamics compelled Kody to consider downsizing.
Also creating tension within the family is the ownership of Coyote Pass, a property initially purchased to accommodate all four wives. In a recent episode, Janelle mentioned her desire to possibly sell her interest in the property but expressed frustrations with Kody over their inability to communicate about it.
Kody and Robyn face health challenges
In 2022, Kody Brown and his spouse, Robyn Brown, faced a serious health challenge when they both contracted COVID-19. Kody had been particularly strict about adhering to health guidelines during the pandemic, which caused strain in family dynamics. Despite his efforts to avoid the virus, he ended up getting infected.
Fortunately, Kody experienced milder symptoms, but Robyn’s condition worsened, leading to her hospitalization due to breathing issues. Kody described his concern during a phone call when he noted, “She sounds pretty bad… I was just wondering if she was going to live.”
Kody chose not to visit Robyn in the hospital, believing it would be better for him to stay away considering the state of other patients. “It seems like a waste for me to be going in there,” he said, emphasizing that he felt staying in the car was a better choice. Luckily, both recovered fully from the virus.
