James Lee Williams, known widely as The Vivienne, has sadly passed away at the young age of 32. This cherished drag artist, actor, and singer gained fame as the winner of the first season of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK in 2019, leaving a significant legacy in the entertainment industry.
The news was shared by their publicist, Simon Jones, on social media, expressing: “With great sorrow, we announce that our dear James Lee Williams, also known as The Vivienne, has died this weekend. James was a deeply loved person, and their family is devastated at the loss of their beloved son, brother, and uncle.”
A Rich Legacy
Originally from Wales and later residing in Liverpool, The Vivienne‘s rise to fame began as the UK Drag Ambassador for the American version of RuPaul’s Drag Race in 2015. Their honest conversations about battling drug addiction during their time on Drag Race UK struck a chord with many, motivating fans to focus on sobriety and self-acceptance.
The Vivienne also made history by being the first drag artist to participate in the competitive show Dancing on Ice, finishing in third place in 2023. Additionally, they showcased their theatrical talent as the Wicked Witch of the West during a tour of The Wizard of Oz, which they described as “the most iconic story ever told.”
Beyond drag, The Vivienne took on acting roles in the acclaimed medical series This Is Going to Hurt and returned to the West End for further performances.
