US President-elect Donald Trump has revealed plans to undertake the most extensive mass deportation of undocumented immigrants in U.S. history, potentially utilizing military resources.
Through a post on his platform Truth Social, Trump shared a statement from John Fitton, president of the conservative group Judicial Watch. Fitton suggested that the incoming administration would declare a national emergency and utilize military powers to counteract what he described as Biden’s “invasion” by launching a significant deportation initiative. Trump responded with a confirmation, stating “TRUE!!!”, which garnered around 20,000 likes and nearly 5,000 shares.
While the specific military units involved in this initiative have not been disclosed, it is important to note that the 1878 Posse Comitatus Act restricts military involvement in U.S. domestic law enforcement. This rule originally applied to the Army but has since extended to other military branches, including the Navy and Air Force.
Trump and His Initial Controversy
Key individuals have already been appointed by Trump to guide his immigration strategy. Tom Homan, recognized for his involvement in the controversial “family separation” policy during Trump’s previous term, will now take on the role of “border czar.”
Stephen Miller, known for his strong stance on immigration, will become the deputy chief of staff. Additionally, South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem will assume the role of homeland security secretary, further solidifying a team known for advocating strict measures against “sanctuary cities.”
Organizations advocating for immigrant rights are preparing legal challenges to oppose any mass deportation efforts. Currently, it is estimated that about 11 million individuals are living unlawfully in the U.S., a decline from the peak of 12.2 million reported by Pew Research Center in 2007.
