Shannen Doherty‘s doctor and close friend, Dr. Lawrence D. Piro, shared details about the actress’s final moments before her passing on Saturday. After a nearly decade-long battle with breast cancer that began in 2015, Doherty sadly lost her fight, despite announcing remission in 2017.
The beloved star was surrounded by close friends as she neared the end, as revealed by Piro to People two days after her passing. Piro commended Doherty‘s unwavering strength, calling her an “incredible warrior” who courageously fought on even as her health deteriorated.
“She was peaceful and at ease, transitioning in her sleep,” the doctor shared with People.
“It was a mix of sadness and serenity, a moment filled with love and beauty. The most challenging part was her reluctance to part ways, as she cherished life deeply.
“The situation became more complex. We persisted in our efforts, offering additional support, love, and hope.”
Navigating Recent Heartbreak
Rosa Doherty, Shannen’s mother, expressed gratitude on Monday to People for the outpouring of love and support shown to Shannen throughout her life.
Meanwhile, Ashley Hamilton, Doherty‘s ex-husband, hailed her as a “guardian angel”. The “Heathers” actress was previously wed to Kurt Iswarienko, with their divorce finalized just a day before her passing.
The couple had parted ways in 2023, and Piro noted that the emotional toll of the separation had affected Doherty‘s resolve in battling her illness.
