Caitlin Clark is currently facing a deeply troubling situation. A man from Texas has been charged with felony stalking after making sexually threatening remarks towards the WNBA player. The nature of his direct messages is particularly disturbing.
According to WISH, Michael Lewis was apprehended on January 12, 2025, at a hotel in downtown Indianapolis. He is said to have traveled from Denton, Texas, sending alarming messages to Clark starting in mid-December 2024, which persisted into January 2025. These messages, originating from his X account, included explicit details and threats, such as statements claiming he was surveilling her home and planning to attend her games: “Been driving around your house 3x a day, but don’t call the law just yet.” He also stated, “I’m getting tickets. I’m sitting behind the bench.”
Before his arrest, law enforcement had a conversation with Lewis on January 8, 2025. In court documents, he described having an “imaginary relationship” with Clark, asserting that he was merely enjoying a vacation in Indianapolis. “It’s an imagination, fantasy-type thing,” he reportedly told the authorities, dismissing his messages as a joke and claiming they were not threatening.
Caitlin Clark Takes Precautions
Court records indicate that despite police warnings to Lewis about the threatening nature of his messages to Clark, he persisted. Clark informed the police that she had never interacted with him and did not respond to his messages.
Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears confirmed that the FBI is involved, linking Lewis’ messages to a hotel in Indianapolis and the local library. He emphasized that Clark’s celebrity status does not protect her from such threats: “This case demonstrates that online harassment can escalate into actual threats of physical harm,” Mears noted. Clark also expressed concerns for her safety and has been taking measures to alter her public appearance. She reportedly has modified her schedule to enhance her security.
The Indianapolis Star reported that prosecutors aim to prohibit Lewis from attending games at Hinkle Fieldhouse and Gainbridge Fieldhouse. If convicted, he risks facing up to six years in prison.
Support in the WNBA
Caitlin Clark is a prominent figure in the WNBA, having earned the title of 2024 Rookie of the Year and securing endorsements with major brands like Nike and Gatorade. However, she is not isolated in her experience of harassment.
In December 2024, a man from Oregon was convicted of stalking Paige Bueckers, a celebrated player at the University of Connecticut who is projected as the top pick in the 2025 WNBA draft. Bueckers, well-regarded for her electrifying play style, faced unwanted attention from an individual who had sent alarming messages claiming to want to marry her and make derogatory statements about women. The perpetrator received a one-year suspended sentence along with three years of probation, restricting him from entering Connecticut.
