Her private nurse discovered her unresponsive, and despite the bodyguard’s efforts with CPR, she was unfortunately declared dead upon arrival at the hospital.
In a press briefing soon after her death, authorities including Seminole Police Chief Charlie Tiger and Dr. Joshua Perper, the Broward County Medical Examiner, addressed the situation. Tiger indicated, “No evidence suggests a crime occurred; we found no illegal substances, just prescribed medications,” although specifics weren’t disclosed. Perper mentioned that Smith was suffering from stomach flu but withheld a cause of death at that time. Subsequent autopsy findings later clarified the dire circumstances surrounding her passing.

As reported by ABC News, Dr. Joshua Perper noted that Smith had taken nine different prescription medications before her demise. Although no single medication at prescribed doses was lethal on its own, the combined effect resulted in her untimely death. Key contributors included diazepam, lorazepam, clonazepam, and chloral hydrate, with the latter being particularly pivotal, tipping the scales toward a fatal outcome. Police Chief Tiger remarked that the incident appeared to be an unfortunate accident, stating, “This was likely an accidental overdose.”
The autopsy further revealed that Smith had an elevated temperature of 105 degrees due to an illness which inhibited her body’s ability to handle the extensive drug intake. Perper explained that her usual dosages might have been manageable under normal circumstances but proved overwhelming in her weakened state. Notably, she had a history of prescription drug misuse and opted not to seek medical assistance before her death to avoid media scrutiny.
