When Dwyane Wade Faced Cancer, Gabrielle Union Discovered Unforeseen Strength

When Dwyane Wade was diagnosed with kidney cancer, it profoundly affected not just him but also Gabrielle Union and their family. Gabrielle is now sharing the emotional journey this brought, particularly during this challenging time.

In an interview with Marie Claire for its first “Motherhood” issue, Union, 52, revealed the intense feelings surrounding her husband’s public announcement. In January, Wade, 43, shared that he had surgery in December 2023 to remove a cancerous tumor, which resulted in the loss of 40% of his right kidney.

The diagnosis was both shocking and deeply personal for Union.

“Even knowing many survivors, your mind goes to the worst-case scenario,” she expressed.

“We internalized his cancer; it became our battle,” she added.

Her feelings were mixed and deeply rooted in fear.

“I thought his choices were selfish, as it felt like he was leaving me to raise our kids alone,” she reflected.

A Challenging Year

Union admitted her feelings were “selfish” but arose from genuine fear. Wade’s desire for privacy created further strain in their relationship.

“His secrecy around his cancer decisions sparked distrust,” she explained.

“It felt like he was distancing himself from us, not just emotionally but in a life-and-death sense.”

The couple faced significant challenges during their ninth year of marriage.

“Year nine was particularly difficult,” Union shared during a February segment on Today with Jenna & Friends. It later became clear that Wade’s private health issues were a significant factor in their struggles.

“Facing mortality in your 40s is harrowing,” Union noted.

“You start questioning your future and identity without your health,” she added. “It’s a tough journey that impacts every aspect of life—your marriage, family, and children.”

Thankfully, after Wade’s surgery, the couple managed to reconnect.

“Once the tumor was removed, we were more aligned,” said Union.

As parents to their 6-year-old daughter, Kaavia James, and guardians to Wade’s four other children—Zaire (22), Zaya (17), Xavier (11), and nephew Dahveon Morris (21)—they strive to nurture a loving, resilient blended family.

Union’s insights highlight not just their fight against cancer, but also the importance of vulnerability and communication during uncertain times. Through the struggles and healing, Gabrielle Union exemplifies strength in the face of adversity.
