From “Red, White & Royal Blue” to “Killers of the Flower Moon,” The Books Becoming Movies in 2023

This version of “The Color Purple” is an adaptation of an adaptation, based both on Walker’s novel and the 2005 Broadway musical adaptation. The story centers on Celie, a young Black woman growing up in the American South in the early 1900s. Over the years, she survives terrible abuse, finds (and loses) love, searches for her sister, and slowly discovers her own incredible strength. The movie cast includes Fantasia, Colman Domingo, Taraji P. Henson, Corey Hawkins, Danielle Brooks, H.E.R., Ciara, and Halley Bailey.
