When Pom Klementieff joined the Guardians of the Galaxy squad as the emotionally intuitive Mantis for 2017’s “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,” she was a little intimidated — the group was already established. Bonding came quickly though, starting with Karen Gillan, who plays Nebula. The duo tell POPSUGAR about one of the very first times they hung out outside of work — and it involved karaoke!
“We connected right away,” Klementieff recounts of their bond, and Gillian says she was thrilled when she found out Klementieff had signed on, because they were a similar age. “I was so happy when she joined the cast because I was like, ‘Right, someone who can do live karaoke with me,'” Gillan, 35, explains.
And then they almost immediately did sign up for live karaoke together — the type of karaoke where you perform alongside a full band for a crowded bar. Klementieff, 37, spills, “We sang a Nirvana song, called ‘Lithium.'”
“They introduced us as the girls from ‘Guardians of the Galaxy,'” Gillan remembers. “And they had no clue who I was,” Klementieff says with a laugh, since this was before “Vol. 2” had introduced her character, Mantis.
“And they didn’t know who I was, because I’m blue and bald in the films,” Gillan adds. The former “Doctor Who” star has said it takes about four hours in the makeup chair to transform her into her alien/cyborg character. “I think they were like, ‘Who are these girls claiming they’re in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’?” Watch the video above to see more from Klementieff and Gillan’s chat with POPSUGAR — and to find out how well they did on our ultimate Guardians of the Galaxy quiz.
“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” is in theaters now.
