Mary J. Blige Discusses How Her Performance in "Ghost" Season 3 Reflects Her Own Divorce and Grief: "Someone Has to Pay"

The Tejada family has suffered a great loss in season three of “Power Book II: Ghost”, and Monet (Mary J. Blige) is consumed with one thing: revenge. In the shocking finale of season two, her husband Lorenzo (Berto Colon) killed her nephew Zeke, unbeknownst to Monet. Now, she is determined to find the person responsible for taking her firstborn away. Blige reveals that Monet’s mission for revenge will put her “in a place where it compromises everything” later on.

The tragedy has had a huge impact on the Tejada’s three children: Cane (Woody McClain), Dru (Lovell Adams-Gray), and Diana (LaToya Tonodeo). Diana unknowingly set off the chain of events that led to Zeke’s death when she informed her father that the bank accounts in a valuable bag were made out to everyone except him. This caused Lorenzo to kill Zeke, mistaking him for his wife’s old flame Mecca (Daniel Sunjata).

Blige draws from her own experiences with divorce to portray Monet’s grief this season. She compares the agony her character feels to the pain she went through during her divorce from Kendu Isaacs, which lasted from 2003 to 2018. “I always say I don’t wish divorce on my worst enemy because it’s like grief,” Blige shares. “It’s definitely like somebody died, because you’re going through so many emotions.”

Tonodeo adds that Monet is more “vulnerable” this season than ever before, and viewers will get to see her mourning for Zeke’s death. However, Blige believes that Monet’s vengeful attitude may lead to everyone gunning for her.

“Power Book II: Ghost” airs new episodes every Friday on Starz.
