It’s been four years since “Deadpool 2” graced the big screen, and fans are eagerly awaiting the third installment. After Disney’s acquisition of 21st Century Fox in March 2019, the fate of the movie franchise and its titular character seemed to be uncertain. But the following year, franchise lead Ryan Reynolds confirmed that “Deadpool 3” was finally in the works. And now, the long-awaited addition to the franchise has gotten even more exciting with the return of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine and his official entrance into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
Reynolds, a producer on all three installments, first revealed the news in a video shared on social media on Sept. 27, 2022. In the clip, he sits on a couch and tells fans he’s had to “really search his soul” to find a way to make “Deadpool’s first appearance in the MCU obviously feel special.” He then reveals that he had an idea, and Jackman walks past in the background. When Reynolds asks if he wants to play Wolverine in “Deadpool 3,” Jackman replies, “Yeah, sure, Ryan.”
Emma Corrin, who starred as Princess Diana in season four of “The Crown,” has a leading role as a villain in the film, according to Deadline. Matthew Macfadyen of “Succession” fame has also joined the cast, though his character is unknown. The movie is directed by Shawn Levy from a script by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. The duo spoke to Discussing Film in June 2022 about making the sequel for Marvel Studios, saying they were grateful for being allowed to write Deadpool again.
It remains to be seen how Deadpool, Wolverine, and friends will fit into the MCU, but we can’t wait to see what the creative team come up with. With Marvel having the rights to many of its most popular heroes, including the other X-Men, we may finally see Deadpool team up with his comic-book comrades.
