Pink‘s Summer Carnival Tour is off to an epic start. On June 7, the singer invited her daughter, Willow Sage Hart, on stage to kick off the tour with a performance of their 2021 duet, “Cover Me in Sunshine.” Overlooking a crowd of thousands in Bolton, England, the 12-year-old confidently scooped up the mic and belted out an angelic version of the mother-daughter love song. The international performance comes six months after Willow left her mom “blown away” by her Olivia Rodrigo cover at her first school recital.
“Must be a surreal moment for mama to have w/ her lil girl on stage.”
“So proud of Willz to get up on stage w/ mama @pink !!!!!” Pink’s husband, Carey Hart, captioned a video of his daughter singing on stage on Instagram. “Must be a surreal moment for mama to have w/ her lil girl on stage. Looks like 1st show of the tour kicked ass!!!!! Can’t wait to catch up end of this month and see for myself. Summer is grind time.”
In the comments section, family friend Selma Blair voiced her own awe and admiration for the stunning performance. “I’m so overwhelmed with love and pride for this gorgeous Willow and her beautiful superstar parents,” she wrote. “Well done. And what an incredible night it looks and sounds.”
Emotional but uplifting, “Cover Me in Sunshine” was originally inspired by the COVID-19 pandemic. After taking a break from music in 2019 to focus more on her family, Pink — like the rest of the world — suddenly found herself isolated. “We all know this year has been different and challenging and at times terrifying and tumultuous and angsty and all the things,” Pink said of writing the song in an Instagram video shared in February 2021. “And I personally find comfort in music, I find comfort in song, I love singing with my daughter and my son.”
During the pandemic, Pink and her son, Jameson Moon Hart, also tested positive for COVID-19. Coupled with the loss of her father in 2021, the sudden health scare inspired Pink to write her “Trustfall” album. “It takes your kids getting sick to be like, ‘OK, none of this matters. I wanna see my kids grow up. That’s what I want,'” she said during a 2022 interview with “Good Morning America.” “I want to only put truth into the world. I want to only be authentic. And I want to be kinder and a better person.” Pink added that she and Willow recorded the song at home because it made them happy. “We hope that the song makes you feel happy,” she said.
In 2018, Pink and her daughter released a cover of the reprise of “A Million Dreams” for the “The Greatest Showman: Reimagined” soundtrack. In May 2021, Willow also shared the stage with her mom at the Billboard Music Awards, where the duo delivered an impressive trapeze performance set to “Cover Me in Sunshine.”
