Scout LaRue Willis ventured into the world of art, but instead of acting like her parents, she chose singing. It took some time for her musical career to take off, but in 2012, she released an EP with her group Gus + Scout. By 2021, she was releasing music as a solo artist, and her single “Love Without Passion” gained attention due to the accompanying video where Willis was nude, but her body was covered by her long hair. The following year, she put out her debut project, the self-titled “Scout LaRue Willis” album. Willis was open about the raw subject matter of the LP, telling Nylon in 2022 that she was all about “radical integration and acceptance of me, even my toxicity.” She also said that the songwriting process was therapeutic for her. Prior to the album, Willis had intentionally tried not to ruffle feathers, but through turmoil, both personally and artistically, she was able to develop her own sound. She told Uproxx in 2022 that she felt like she was singing these songs to the girl she used to be. Additionally, Willis discussed how having famous parents impacted her work, saying that it was hard not to feel like she had something to prove.
