Solange Knowles’ Son Julez Was Born When She Was 18 Years Old

Solange Knowles experienced a range of emotions when she became a mother at the age of 18. She and her teenage sweetheart, Daniel Julez Smith, had married when she was 17 and moved to Idaho, where Smith was in school, to raise their son Julez. In 2017, Knowles told Elle magazine that while she was filled with love for her son, it was also a difficult time as she was often alone with him and felt isolated. A couple of years later, Knowles and Smith divorced. In a letter to her teenage self for Teen Vogue, Knowles reflected on the struggles of being a young mother but ultimately concluded that she had made the decision out of love.
