"The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes" Teaser Poster Reveals a Threatening Conflict to Come

Lionsgate has released the teaser poster for the highly anticipated prequel movie to “The Hunger Games,” “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.” On March 25, the studio unveiled the poster, which features a golden bird and snake ready to do battle against a dramatic black background. Last August, Lionsgate also released a first-look photo of Zegler’s Lucy Gray Baird and Blyth’s young Coriolanus Snow.

The movie has an all-star cast, including Viola Davis as Dr. Volumnia Gaul, the head gamemaker for the 10th annual Hunger Games, Emmy winner Peter Dinklage as Casca Highbottom, the dean of the Academy, and “Euphoria” star Hunter Schafer as Tigris Snow, Coriolanus’s cousin and confidante.

Based on Suzanne Collins’s prequel novel of the same name, “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” takes place 64 years before the original novels and films and 10 years after Panem’s first rebellion. The plot follows an 18-year-old Coriolanus as he mentors Lucy — a tribute from District 12 — during the 10th Hunger Games at the academy in the Capitol. Lionsgate revealed at CinemaCon last April that the movie is currently in production and will be released on Nov. 17, 2023. A brief clip of footage was also shown at CinemaCon, which only showed icy tree branches and text that read, “The world will discover who is a songbird and who is a snake.”

The original Hunger Games movies starred Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Amandla Stenberg, Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks, Stanley Tucci, Lenny Kravitz, and Sam Claflin. Donald Sutherland played President Coriolanus Snow.
