Black Adam and Shazam have a long and complicated relationship within the DC Comics universe, with Black Adam being both an antihero and villain. While Dwayne Johnson’s “Black Adam” movie didn’t feature Zachary Levi’s Shazam, there is hope that the demigod may appear in the newly released “Shazam! Fury of the Gods” sequel.
What is the Connection Between Black Adam and Shazam?
Black Adam (Teth-Adam) and Shazam (Billy Batson) have many similarities: they both transform by saying the same word “Shazam” and have the powers to shoot lightning and fly. Both of them owe their origin story to the same DC Comics wizard, Shazam. The wizard chose Teth-Adam to be his successor due to his assumed moral superiority, but this trust was eventually betrayed by Black Adam. The wizard then inducted Billy Batson as the champion of good through the superhero moniker Captain Marvel.
Is Black Adam in “Shazam! Fury of the Gods”?
Black Adam was mentioned in the 2019 film “Shazam!”, but he does not appear in “Shazam! Fury of the Gods” and is not mentioned. This is probably because Black Adam and Shazam were developed as their own standalone franchises: Johnson’s solo film “Black Adam” was released in 2022, while Levi’s Shazam stars in both “Shazam!” and its sequel.
Will There Ever Be a Shazam and Black Adam Crossover Movie?
Shazam franchise director David F. Sandberg confirmed that the comic hero and villain needed their own movies in a July 2022 interview with Collider, but he left the door open for crossovers in the future. However, with the shakeups in DC Comics’s leadership, it seems less likely that a crossover movie will happen. “Black Adam” was not continuing on as a franchise and Henry Cavill announced he would no longer return as Superman in the DC Universe.
“Shazam! Fury of the Gods” is now showing in theaters.
