Cybersecurity Overview in Vietnam for 2024
The National Cybersecurity Authority (NCA) has published insights regarding the status of cybersecurity in Vietnamese organizations following its report for 2024.
This survey, executed in December 2024, engaged nearly 5,000 organizations across Vietnam. The results indicated notable advancements in cybersecurity awareness, a rise in investments in tech solutions, and efforts directed at standardizing security measures.
Some key insights reveal that 85.11% of organizations have implemented antivirus solutions on their systems, while 75.68% have installed firewalls. Moreover, 64.13% have established data backup and recovery systems. It’s worth noting that although 75.68% conducted at least one cybersecurity training for staff this year, 24.32% did not provide any training.
Emerging technologies are gaining popularity, with 47.11% of organizations looking into centralized security operation centers (SOCs) and 35.26% utilizing cybersecurity intelligence services. However, the year also saw a surge in cyber threats and prevalent attack strategies.
In 2024, a significant increase in cyberattacks targeting businesses, governmental bodies, and educational and healthcare sectors was observed. Approximately 659,000 attacks were reported, with 46.15% of the surveyed entities experiencing at least one incident. Disturbingly, 6.77% encountered frequent attacks.
Common Types of Cyberattacks
The prevalent tactics used in these attacks include:
- Advanced Persistent Threats (APT): Making up 26.14% of events, these attacks often utilize spyware and target sensitive information.
- Ransomware: Reported by 14.59% of the organizations, these incidents are particularly dangerous as encrypted data can be lost without ransom payment.
NCA specialists underscore the pressing necessity for enhancing cybersecurity strategies to tackle the escalating threats.
Recommendations include:
- Regular audits: Conduct scans for vulnerabilities in applications, software, and network systems and ensure timely security patching.
- 24/7 surveillance: Maintain constant monitoring of network activities to quickly identify unusual behaviors.
- Incident response protocols: Develop comprehensive plans for addressing breaches and ensure regular data backups to mitigate potential damages.
Vu Ngoc Son, the Chief Technology Officer at NCA, stresses the importance of collective action: “To enhance cybersecurity, we need a united approach involving government, businesses, and the tech sector. Speedy establishment of legal regulations and proactive information sharing are crucial for ensuring national cybersecurity and enabling progress in the digital age.”
