An exhibition displaying artworks that combine Vietnamese traditional lacquer art painting and carving techniques is currently taking place in the capital.
The exhibition, named Mạch Di Sản (Heritage Continuum), is a collaborative effort between the Latoa Indochine artist group and the Hoàn Kiếm Lake and Hanoi Old Quarter Management Board. It aims to showcase innovative works inspired by traditional Vietnamese folk painting.
This event is part of a series of cultural activities marking the 79th anniversary of the August Revolution, the 79th National Day of the Socialist Republic of Việt Nam, and the upcoming 70th anniversary of the Liberation of the Capital.
Phạm Tuấn Long, chairman of the Hoàn Kiếm District People’s Committee, highlighted the historical significance of Vietnamese folk painting and the efforts to preserve this artistic heritage.
The art group Latoa Indochine is dedicated to revitalizing folk painting through lacquer art, breathing new life into traditional works from genres like Đông Hồ, Kim Hoàng, and Hàng Trống. By infusing contemporary elements, they aim to uphold the essence of folk painting while creating fresh pieces.
The Heritage Continuum exhibition aims to raise awareness of Vietnam’s cultural legacy and promote the artistic value of traditional lacquer art and folk painting genres.
This endeavour seeks to establish folk painting as a distinctive cultural product of Hà Nội and Việt Nam, nurturing appreciation for the nation’s rich cultural and historical heritage.

Aside from folk paintings, the exhibition also showcases artworks featuring lotus flowers, dances, landscapes, and figures, showcasing the artists’ dedication to their craft.
Furthermore, the event includes workshops where visitors can delve into the art of lacquer painting, carving, and traditional folk painting techniques, offering a hands-on experience and a deeper understanding of Vietnam’s artistic traditions.
