During a recent visit to Ho Chi Minh City, Jeff Dean, Google’s Chief Scientist in Artificial Intelligence, highlighted Vietnam’s potential in the global AI landscape. At the Generative AI Conference themed “New Horizons,” he discussed how AI could drive economic growth and address societal challenges in Vietnam.

Jeff Dean, leading Google’s AI research and a co-founder of Google Brain, Google Translate, and Gemini, delved into Google’s advancements in AI. Under his guidance, Google DeepMind has made significant progress, particularly in generative AI, enhancing machines’ ability to process natural language and generate relevant content for various applications.

He showcased Google’s latest achievements in generative AI, focusing on the Gemini 1.5 Pro model, a powerful AI designed to process vast data and create high-quality multimedia content. This model signifies a leap forward in AI development and offers new insights into AI’s future and the developer’s role.

The Gemini 1.5 Pro model excels in processing different data types like text, images, audio, and video. Dr. Dean highlighted its capability to translate the rare Kalamang language with remarkable accuracy, showcasing generative AI’s potential in cultural preservation and academic research.

Besides, Dr. Dean discussed AI’s applications in critical areas like wildfire prediction, livestock health monitoring, and cancer diagnosis. He stressed the need for developers to embed strong ethical principles into AI systems as its benefits expand.

By outlining Google’s seven ethical principles in AI research, including fairness and safety, Dr. Dean underscored the importance of responsible AI development and application, especially in fields like healthcare and education.

According to Dr. Dean, AI represents not only technological progress but also a potent tool that, when developed ethically, can bring immense benefits and open up unprecedented opportunities, emphasizing the synergy between AI and human intelligence.

Dr. Dean emphasized the necessity of investing in education and fostering opportunities for young individuals to engage with AI to unleash its full potential, a collective effort that extends beyond tech companies.

“Vietnam, with its robust education system, is well-suited to cultivate the next generation of AI talent,” Dr. Dean concluded.
