Following Storm Yagi, the Soc Son district in Hanoi experienced severe flooding from the Cau and Ca Lo rivers, devastating numerous rice fields and crops, leaving much farmland underwater and destroyed.
Data from the Soc Son district People’s Committee revealed that approximately 230 hectares of rice fields were affected, with the hardest hit areas being the villages of Hoa Binh and An Lac in Trung Gia commune.
In An Lac village alone, 110 hectares of rice were fully submerged, and an additional 10 hectares were flattened. The rice stalks that remained above water have turned yellow due to extended flooding, rendering them unsalvageable. Farmers must now clear these fields and prepare them with lime for the upcoming planting season.
For local farmers like Do Van Trung from An Lac, the impact is profound. His family’s 3,600 square meters of rice, which were nearing harvest, are now flat and lifeless following the flooding. Trung expressed, “In other parts of the district, some crops can still be salvaged, but here, we have nothing left to harvest.”
Beyond the damaged crops, significant erosion has affected roads linking the fields to the river. Notably, a 55-meter segment of embankment designed to protect this area has collapsed, necessitating urgent repairs.
The flooding also devastated fruit trees in Ta Thi Chau’s orchard, with the loss estimated at nearly VND 200 million. An Lac emerged as the most impacted region in Soc Son, where vegetable gardens were obliterated. Additionally, floodwaters intruded into the homes of 430 families in the village.
At a local playground, the grass has dried out, and the area is now muddied.
Many village roads remain coated in mud, creating thick, cracked surfaces. Some areas are still submerged, which has prevented officials from completing a comprehensive damage evaluation.
