Harnessing the Potential: Mekong Delta’s 100,000 MW Renewable Energy Frontier

Mekong Delta capable of exploiting 100,000MW of wind and solar power

Workshop on Green Energy Solutions in Mekong Delta

On November 14, a workshop titled “Green energy, policies and practical solutions for businesses in Mekong Delta” was co-hosted by the Can Tho City Department of Industry and Trade, the Vietnam-Asia NetZero Science and Cooperation Center (Vanza), and Hua Wei.

The director of the Can Tho City Department of Industry and Trade, Ha Vu Son, emphasized that transitioning to green energy is essential to meet international standards and promote sustainable development.

The Mekong Delta, rich in potential for wind, solar, and biomass energy, can significantly contribute to electricity generation, enhancing national energy security. New policies under Decree 135/2024 aim to stimulate renewable energy development in Vietnam.

Discussing rooftop solar power, Son highlighted its dual benefits: cost savings for businesses and enhanced competitiveness in selective export markets.

Power demand is rapidly rising at 15% annually, projected to grow by 12% per year over the next ten years, with estimates suggesting a quadrupling in demand by 2030 compared to 2005 levels. Emphasizing renewable energy is not just a trend, but a vital strategy for sustainability.

Nguyen Hoang Dung, head of the renewable energy division of PECC3, referred to rooftop solar as a practical solution for businesses aiming to harness green energy.

He pointed out that producing energy on-site reduces operating expenses and alleviates the burden on the national power grid, especially amid increasing demand.

In the solar-rich Mekong Delta, rooftop solar installations can optimize costs and enhance production efficiency. This approach, once adopted by companies and households, will aid in realizing Vietnam’s renewable energy development objectives.

According to Ho Quang Minh, president of Vanza, the Mekong Delta faces unprecedented challenges due to climate change and rising populations, necessitating a swift transition to green energy to sustain production and foster economic growth.

Implementing renewable energy and advanced technologies can lessen environmental impacts while creating new growth opportunities and fostering international collaboration.

Businesses and organizations should learn from the experiences of others to formulate renewable energy strategies that contribute to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
