Pickleball, an American-born sport, is gaining momentum in Vietnam, attracting thousands of players participating in both friendly matches and competitions.
Originating in 1965 in Washington, USA, by Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell, and Barney McCallum, Pickleball has garnered a massive following in the United States, with over 13 million players in 2023, including notable figures like Bill Gates and LeBron James.
Combining elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis, Pickleball has a unique appeal due to its accessibility, simplicity, and inclusivity across all age groups.
Introduced to Vietnam recently, the sport has quickly amassed around 10,000 players in major cities, especially among the youth, who are embracing Pickleball as their new favorite pastime.
The game is played on a 13×6.1-meter court with a net at 0.86 meters high, using lightweight paddles made of composite or graphite and holed polymer balls. Pickleball can be played as singles or doubles, with rules akin to tennis.
Players score points by outmaneuvering their opponents, with games typically played in three sets, requiring 11 points for singles and 15 points for doubles to win a set.
Unlike other sports demanding high skill levels, fitness, and resources, Pickleball offers a simplified experience, allowing beginners to grasp the basics in just a few sessions. Its low impact, small court size, and lightweight equipment also minimize the risk of injuries.
For those interested in Pickleball, the initial investment is modest, covering essentials like shoes, paddles, balls, and court rental, making it economically viable and appealing across various demographics in Vietnam.
Ngo Ich Quan from the General Department of Sports and Physical Training (GDS) acknowledges the health benefits of Pickleball, emphasizing the sport’s calorie-burning nature and the need for consistent practice for technical and physical aptitude.
Despite its growing popularity, Pickleball has faced challenges in Vietnam, notably with concerns about player conduct and attire, with some participants prioritizing looks over gameplay.
Efforts are being made by governing bodies like the GDS to introduce regulations for player behavior, ensuring a positive and sportsmanlike culture within the Pickleball community.
The establishment of global federations like the World Pickleball Federation and the International Pickleball Federation has provided structure to the sport, although it has yet to be recognized by the International Olympic Committee.
