General Secretary and President To Lam, along with his wife Ngo Phuong Ly and a high-level delegation from Vietnam, arrived at JFK International Airport in New York on the afternoon of September 21 (local time) to commence an important trip for the UN Future Summit and the 79th General Assembly.
The UN Future Summit will take place from September 22-23, leading up to the 79th UN General Assembly, which starts on September 24. This summit, themed “Multilateral Solutions for a Better Future,” is designed to promote the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, address climate issues, and enhance global governance.
Upon their arrival at JFK, the delegation was greeted by Vietnam’s Ambassador to the U.S., Nguyen Quoc Dung, his spouse, Vietnam’s UN Ambassador, Dang Hoang Giang, and other embassy staff.
This visit signifies a key moment in highlighting Vietnam’s commitment to the UN and showcasing its proactive role in tackling both regional and global issues.
Vietnam has long been recognized as a reliable and engaged member of the United Nations, contributing to peacekeeping missions and participating in various UN entities such as the Human Rights Council for 2023-2026 and the International Law Commission for 2023-2027, while also serving as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council.
Additionally, this visit coincides with the first anniversary of the Vietnam-U.S. Comprehensive Strategic Partnership upgrade and serves as a precursor to the celebrations of 30 years of diplomatic relations in 2025.
This event provides a platform for both nations to review their upgraded partnership’s achievements and to strategize for continued positive and stable development in the years ahead.
According to Foreign Ministry spokesperson Pham Thu Hang, General Secretary and President To Lam is set to give important speeches at the Future Summit and during the 79th UN General Assembly, as well as engage in bilateral talks and attend key events.
Ambassador Nguyen Quoc Dung mentioned that Mr. To Lam’s itinerary is filled with meetings, including discussions with U.S. officials, business leaders, academics, and the Vietnamese diaspora.
A key highlight of the trip will be a celebration of the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and the U.S. and the first anniversary of their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. General Secretary and President To Lam will also present a major policy address at Columbia University, further strengthening the bilateral relationship.
Other members of the delegation will participate in various bilateral discussions with their U.S. counterparts, aiming to bolster cooperation further between the two nations.
