The Hanoi Traffic Police Department has officially rejected rumors that a young man earned 50 million VND (around 2,100 USD) in one day by reporting traffic violations, labeling the claims as false.
On January 3, various social media users circulated posts asserting, “Hanoi: A young man makes 50 million VND by reporting traffic violations in just one day.”
These claims were widely shared, accompanied by screenshots across multiple platforms.
After evaluating the situation, a representative from the Traffic Police Department confirmed that these assertions were fabricated and misleading. They cautioned that such falsehoods can distort public perception and undermine the objectives of a current campaign that encourages citizens to report traffic violations.
The initiative, named “All citizens participate in identifying and reporting traffic violations,” has been in effect and has shown significant progress in 2024. As a result of this effort, authorities have handled 2,609 violation cases and collected fines amounting to 2.7 billion VND (approximately 113,400 USD).
To engage the public, the Hanoi Police have created a Zalo page called “Traffic Police Department of Hanoi Police” and a hotline at 0243.942.4451, which allows citizens to report any traffic rule infringements.
The department urges individuals to relay information, photos, and videos of issues that may damage traffic infrastructure, cause environmental harm, or heighten the risks of congestion and accidents.
Officials emphasized the need for reported information to be objective and precise. Ensuring that the processes for receiving, verifying, and resolving these reports are timely and lawful is crucial. Moreover, the identities of those providing information will be kept confidential to protect their privacy.
