Severe Storm Causes Extensive Damage
A spokesperson from the Department of Dike Management and Natural Disaster Prevention and Control, part of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, reported that recent storms have led to catastrophic flooding and landslides.
The storm has resulted in the tragic loss of 197 lives, while 128 individuals have sustained injuries. The province of Lao Cai is experiencing significant devastation, with 177 fatalities, including 82 confirmed deaths and 95 individuals still unaccounted for.
The village of Lang Nu, located in Phuc Khanh commune within Bao Yen district, was particularly hard hit, with 99 people dead or missing after a major landslide.
In the province of Cao Bang, the storm has accounted for 34 fatalities, with 18 people still missing. Additionally, in Yen Bai, 44 individuals are confirmed dead or missing.
Other areas like Quang Ninh, Hai Phong, Hai Duong, and the city of Hanoi have also reported casualties, with Quang Ninh recording 15 deaths.
Rescue efforts are ongoing, and international aid has begun to arrive. Australia has dispatched humanitarian shipments to Hanoi, which have subsequently been sent to Yen Bai.
The United States has pledged $1 million in humanitarian assistance to aid recovery efforts in the regions affected by the storm.
