The Bai Chay tourist area in Ha Long City, Quang Ninh, has faced severe devastation due to Typhoon Yagi. Even though the typhoon had not made landfall by noon on September 7, the area experienced heavy rain and strong winds that resulted in numerous large trees falling and being uprooted.
In the Old Quarter of Bai Chay Ward, many large trees were knocked down by powerful winds, obstructing roads and causing damage to traffic signs and directions. Some vehicles were stranded due to debris on the roads, forcing drivers to find alternative routes.
A restaurant sign in the busy tourist area also collapsed due to the strong winds, highlighting the intensity of the storm.
Despite preventive measures, several restaurants suffered destruction, with signs and metal structures being blown onto the streets. By 10:45 AM, the vicinity of Bai Chay Bridge was enveloped in darkness, heavy rainfall, and powerful gusts of wind.
To address the unsafe conditions, Ha Long City declared a ban on motorcycle traffic over Bai Chay Bridge.
In order to assist the residents, the local government dispatched six trucks to offer free transportation for individuals needing to cross the bridge between Hon Gai and Bai Chay.
One local resident, Mrs. Le Thi Buoi, shared her worries: “I reside in Hon Gai but work in Bai Chay. The closure of the bridge made me concerned about getting back home. Fortunately, the authorities have arranged transportation to keep us safe from harm.”
As Typhoon Yagi’s impact escalated by 11:30 AM, the Quang Ninh Department of Transport advised all vehicles to refrain from crossing Bai Chay Bridge for safety precautions. Checkpoints have been established at both ends of the bridge to uphold the restriction.
