Nguyen Van Chinh Trung’s Journey to Baking
Despite facing inclement weather, 52-year-old Nguyen Van Chinh Trung made the decision to ride his motorbike from Bien Hoa City in Dong Nai province to Binh Thanh district in HCM City. His goal was to attend a complimentary baking class hosted by Hanh.
?Trung is actively involved in charity work, particularly initiatives that provide food to those in need. When he learned about Hanh’s bakery course, he quickly signed up to enhance his culinary skills.
Upon arriving, Trung was taken aback by the diverse group of participants in the class, consisting of individuals from various regions, age groups, and professions.
Hanh: The Passionate Teacher
Although not a trained chef, Hanh has nurtured a love for cooking since childhood. Regardless of her job or surroundings, she always sought to learn and refine her cooking abilities. While working in tourism, she had the opportunity to teach international visitors how to create Vietnamese dishes.
Following her retirement, Hanh began hosting free cooking workshops at her home for friends. Due to popular demand for baking classes, she decided to focus on teaching cake-making.
“Initially, I conducted free cooking lessons at temples. Recognizing a growing interest, I later established a class in my home,” Hanh explained, welcoming all who wish to join.
A Class for Everyone
The baking class attracts individuals for various reasons. Some hope to make delightful cakes for loved ones, while others aspire to become professional bakers.
“The class is entirely free, including all materials. We’ve been operating for 12 years, starting with just a few participants, and now we accommodate 30-35 students,” she shared.
Classes are held every Sunday from 8 AM to 11:30 AM, during which Hanh demonstrates how to create one or two cake recipes each time.
Before each session, she provides printed recipes and prepares the necessary ingredients. Throughout the lesson, students receive hands-on guidance, take notes, and can record the baking process. Hanh generously shares her culinary tips gathered over the years, allowing students to take home their baked creations.
Inspiration from Students
One of Hanh’s dedicated students, 72-year-old Phan Thi Khanh Nhu from Ba Ria-Vung Tau, has attended multiple classes. To make it to class on time, she rises at 4 AM to travel by bus to HCM City.
“Her aim is to unite students with their families through the joy of baking,” Nhu remarked.
Hanh’s classes have proven beneficial; several students have transitioned into professional bakers, opening their own shops to support their families.
A Rewarding Experience
Running the class comes with significant costs for Hanh. Nevertheless, she finds fulfillment in conducting the program, far outweighing the expenditures.
“Each student is like a flower that brings joy and happiness. Instead of leading a leisurely retirement, I prefer to dedicate my time to teaching and assisting those in need,” she expressed.
“I believe my students find happiness in preparing delicious meals for their families, and their joy reflects my own,” she added.
Hanh shared a touching story of a student who was struggling with her relationship with her mother-in-law. After attending the class and making cakes together, their bond improved significantly. Hanh noted that such experiences bring her great happiness and motivate her to keep the class going.
“I’ve lived a joyful life, so I want to dedicate my remaining years to doing good and expressing gratitude for what I’ve received,” she concluded.
