The local government reported that the event took place at approximately 5:30 p.m. on May 21, near the stream that lies between Quang Thanh and Quang Thinh communes in Hai Ha District.

A spokesperson from the Hai Ha District People’s Committee explained, “The stream was usually shallow. However, a sudden downpour upstream caused the water levels to rise abruptly, preventing the children from returning to the bank.”
Rescue operations commenced promptly after the incident. Three students were successfully rescued, but tragically, one was found lifeless. By 8:35 p.m. that evening, another body was retrieved, bringing the total fatalities to two. Efforts to locate two missing students are still underway.
Nghiem Xuan Cuong, the Vice Chairman of the Quang Ninh Provincial People’s Committee, arrived to supervise the rescue activities and coordinate further search initiatives.
Officials from both the provincial and district levels visited medical facilities to extend their sympathies to the families affected and arranged support teams for funeral services in the impacted communities.
The initial inquiry revealed the identities of the seven involved students, namely: H.C.D.T., B.T.Q., T.T.K., T.D.K., N.V.H., N.H.N., and another known simply as T.
Authorities confirmed that while the stream usually has low water levels, the unexpected surge from recent rainfall created a rapid current that surprised the children.
Search teams are actively looking for the two missing students, facing challenging terrain and fluctuating water conditions.
