Vietnam Poised to Dominate Group E in 2026 AFC Women’s Cup

Vietnam ready to lead Group E at 2026 AFC Women’s Asian Cup

Prior to the commencement of Group E in the 2026 AFC Women’s Asian Cup qualifiers, head coach Mai Duc Chung expressed the Vietnamese women’s national team’s strong resolve, while also recognizing the advancements made by the other teams in the group: Maldives, UAE, and Guam.

During a press conference held on June 28, ahead of the Group E matches for the 2026 AFC Women’s Asian Cup qualifiers, head coach Mai Duc Chung, who leads the Vietnamese side, discussed the team’s dedication and extensive preparations.

“Our objective is to secure the top position in the group, and we will display our commitment starting from the first match against the Maldives. Each opponent in our group has shown notable improvement, having engaged in friendly matches and key preparations. Therefore, it’s essential for us to stay vigilant and perform to the best of our abilities in every game,” he asserted.

Coach Chung noted that Vietnam’s path to this qualifier has highlighted many positive aspects, particularly a training camp in Japan.

“Japan provided an exceptional training ground. At home, we often face male teams, but in Japan, we were able to train alongside competitive women’s teams, which significantly enhanced our skills,” he remarked.

Addressing the team selection, Chung clarified the exclusion of overseas Vietnamese player Nam Mi: “We always appreciate contributions from Viet Kieu players. However, for this selection, professional factors led to Nam Mi not making the final roster. Instead, we have included several promising younger players like Nguyen Thi Hoa, Minh Chuyen, and Thu Em, who all require additional match experience.”

Maldives coach Mohamed Athif shared his enthusiasm for the challenge of competing against formidable teams: “Facing Vietnam in the opening game presents a significant challenge for us. While our preparations have been somewhat limited, we will approach the match with high spirits and strive to deliver an exciting performance.”

The head coach of UAE mentioned the team is experiencing a positive shift post-COVID-19. “We are concentrating on providing more opportunities for local players, aligning with our cultural framework and long-term development goals. This tournament will enable us to evaluate the current state and future of UAE women’s football,” he explained.

Guam’s coach Kim Sherman adopted a humble yet hopeful stance, saying: “Our goal is to gain a deeper understanding of our team’s strengths through this tournament and to learn from more experienced regional teams.”

The Group E qualifiers are scheduled from June 29 to July 5 at Viet Tri Stadium in Phu Tho, featuring four teams: Vietnam, Maldives, UAE, and Guam.

Only the leading team will advance to the final round of the 2026 AFC Women’s Asian Cup. This qualifying stage is vital for reaffirming Vietnam’s role in continental football.
