Vietnam targets $1.5 billion in livestock exports

Vietnam aims for 1.5 billion USD target from livestock exports

Export numbers in the first half of the year have shown a strong start, reaching $240 million, representing a 3.8% yearly growth, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. Processed meat products lead the way, with fresh, chilled, and frozen pork closely behind.

Vietnam has successfully introduced processed chicken meat into markets such as Japan, Hong Kong (China), five Eurasian Economic Union countries, and Mongolia.

The country has achieved significant milestones, including obtaining export licenses for dairy and bird’s nest products to China. The Department of Animal Health (DAH) is actively working on expanding market access for these products and engaging in negotiations with the Republic of Korea, Singapore, the EU, the UK, and the Middle East.

DAH Director Nguyen Van Long mentioned ongoing discussions with the Republic of Korea’s Ministry of Food and Drug Safety to establish food safety standards for poultry products.

Key industry players like Masan, C.P. Vietnam, Koyu & Unitek, Japfa, De Heus, and GreenFeed are investing significantly in disease-free zones and advanced processing facilities.

Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Phung Duc Tien emphasized the sector’s goal of achieving comprehensive, efficient, and sustainable livestock development that can adapt to climate change through industrialization and modernization. The strategy involves integrating value chains and circular economy principles to increase value and ensure biosecurity, disease control, and food safety.

Tapping into new markets like the Halal market is vital for boosting exports overall and specifically enhancing livestock product exports, Tien noted. – VNA
