Decline in IELTS Scores for Vietnamese Candidates
Recent statistics reveal that the average IELTS score for Vietnamese test-takers has decreased to 6.2 for the 2023-2024 assessment period, indicating a drop in the international standings compared to prior years. Merely 1% of the candidates managed to achieve scores of 8.5 or above.
New data published by the co-organizers of the IELTS exam shows Vietnam’s average score of 6.2 places it 29th out of 39 evaluated countries and regions for the Academic IELTS. This is a decline of six positions since the last ranking in 2022.
For the current period, the IELTS proficiency scores for Vietnamese candidates are as follows: Listening (6.3), Reading (6.4), Writing (6.0), and Speaking (5.7). When compared with global averages, Vietnamese candidates performed below average in Listening and Speaking, which are 6.6 and 6.3, while their Reading and Writing scores align with the global benchmarks.
The most frequent score recorded among Vietnamese IELTS candidates was 6.0, which represented 21% of test-takers. Scores of 5.5 and 6.5 were also common, each accounting for 18%. Only 5% of candidates achieved a score of 8.0 or more.
Among the surveyed countries, Malaysia and Spain boasted the highest average IELTS scores of 7.1, followed by Italy at 7.0. These nations also reported the highest percentages of candidates attaining scores of 8.0 or above, with Malaysia at 25%, Spain at 23%, and Italy at 19%.
Within Southeast Asia, besides Malaysia’s top score of 7.1, several nations surpassed Vietnam’s performance, including the Philippines (6.8), Indonesia (6.7), and Myanmar (6.6). Vietnam’s average of 6.2 exceeded the results from China and Japan, both of which averaged 5.9.
