Situated in Phuoc Khanh Commune within the Nhon Trach District of Dong Nai Province, the Nhon Trach 3 and 4 Power Plants represent significant advancements in Vietnam’s energy landscape.
These plants are notable for being the first in the country to harness LNG, a more environmentally friendly and efficient energy source that aligns with international energy practices.
On February 4, teams at the Nhon Trach 3 facility were busy performing final technical checks to ensure everything is set for operation.
Phan Minh Tam, Deputy Head of Project Safety, shared that critical systems, such as the 220kV power distribution network, along with water treatment and waste management facilities, have successfully passed rigorous testing.
In the main control room, dubbed the project’s “heart,” specialists from both Vietnam and abroad are conducting thorough evaluations prior to the plant becoming fully operational.
International engineer Satri GE highlighted the importance of this development, stating, “Integrating with the national grid is an essential milestone for advancing the Nhon Trach 4 project.”
The plants, owned by the PetroVietnam Power Corporation (PV Power), have a combined output of 1,624 MW and are projected to produce around 9 billion kWh annually, which will significantly boost energy reliability in southern Vietnam.
A key achievement occurred on February 5 at 11:11 AM, when the Nhon Trach 3 plant successfully synchronized with the national electricity grid at a capacity of 50 MW.
Project leaders aim for the plant to commence commercial power production in July 2025, with Nhon Trach 4 following suit in October 2025.
Le Ba Quy, Project Management Board Director, emphasized the strategic role of the Nhon Trach 3 and 4 facilities, noting they are the only LNG plants currently under construction among 13 planned in the national energy framework.
Recognized as a vital national infrastructure initiative, these projects have garnered strong governmental support, with careful monitoring from various ministries and regulatory bodies.
The completion of these plants will facilitate further LNG projects under Vietnam’s approved Power Development Plan VIII.
In addition to stabilizing energy supply, this initiative demonstrates Vietnam’s dedication to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, aligning with international climate commitments made during COP26.
As LNG continues to gain importance in Vietnam’s energy sector, the Nhon Trach 3 and 4 plants signify a major leap towards adopting cleaner and sustainable energy practices for the future.
