Metro Line 12 and Can Gio Bridge Plans
The upcoming Metro Line 12, linking District 7 to Can Gio, is set to integrate seamlessly with the Can Gio Bridge project, which is expected to begin construction on April 30, 2025, and reach completion by 2028.
Currently, the only means of transport connecting downtown Ho Chi Minh City to Can Gio is the Binh Khanh ferry that crosses the Soai Rap River. The new bridge is intended to replace the ferry, improving access and facilitating significant development efforts such as the Can Gio land reclamation and international port initiatives.
To support these developments, Vingroup is exploring the establishment of a metro line in accordance with Ho Chi Minh City’s revised master plan, which emphasizes the need for urban rail connections to Can Gio.
Vingroup asserts that establishing a metro line to Can Gio would align with contemporary transportation practices, fulfilling development requirements and enhancing connectivity.
The firm has sought to partner with the Department of Transport and the consulting team of the Can Gio Bridge project to facilitate technical and investment analyses that would link the metro with the bridge.
Once their investigation concludes, a viable proposal will be presented to the municipal government for consideration.
Collaborative Efforts for Project Development
A meeting organized by the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport on January 6 focused on the metro line proposal with various stakeholders, including Vingroup.
During this gathering, Vingroup committed to providing detailed documentation related to the project’s technical aspects, research scope, funding formats, and stakeholder responsibilities.
This will assist the Department of Transport in advising the local government on future actions regarding the project.
The initiative is in line with Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh’s goal of involving large corporations in infrastructure developments. During the 2021-2030 Ho Chi Minh City Planning Conference, the Prime Minister recounted a discussion with Vingroup’s Chairman, Pham Nhat Vuong, on constructing a metro link from the city center to Can Gio.
“The Vingroup Chairman expressed great enthusiasm for the idea,” noted the Prime Minister, encouraging the city to delegate significant projects to major enterprises as it moves forward with its planning.
Responding to this vision, Nguyen Van Nen, Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee, assured the execution of approved plans and adherence to directives from the Prime Minister and relevant ministries.
