Alkali Baba Refuses to Comply with Court Order to Release Detained Cameroonian

The Inspector General of Police, Alkali Baba Usman, has once again disregarded a court order. According to DailyPost, Usman refused to bring Agborsangaya Eyong, a Cameroonian citizen, to a Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday. Eyong has been detained for over 400 days without bail, and was allegedly found to have illegal ammunition in his house. His lawyer, Mr Danshita Shittu, expressed his discontent to the court that the order to produce Eyong was not followed by the Police Chief. The IGP’s counsel, Assistant Superintendent of Police Joseph Udo, argued that the court order arrived too late and that the matter was referred to the Attorney General of the Federation AGF. The detainee’s lawyer asked for an order from the court to release Eyong on bail, as well as compensation of N100 million and an apology in two national newspapers. Justice Rita Ofili-Ajumogobia of the Federal High Court Abuja has set March 31 for the hearing of the case.
