A 30-year-old woman named Rebecca Ako has been detained by the Osun Amotekun Corps for attempting to purchase food with counterfeit Naira notes.

Ako was among a group of suspects showcased by the Corps Commander, Dr. Adekunle Omoyele, during an event in Osogbo on September 24, 2024, related to various illegal activities in the region.

According to the Osun Amotekun Corps spokesperson, Yusuf Idowu, Ako was apprehended at Sabo Market in Ilesa while trying to use fake N1000 bills to pay for her shopping.

Dr. Omoyele revealed that Ako confessed to the crime, explaining her desperate financial situation as the catalyst for her actions.

When asked about the incident, Ako acknowledged her wrongdoing, explaining that a former co-tenant had introduced her to counterfeiting after her husband had abandoned her.

“I come from Benue State and reside in Owenna. I employed fake currency to buy goods. A woman named Mrs. Elizabeth, who I lived with after my husband left, contacted me and suggested using counterfeit cash,” she recounted.

“She would send me fake Naira through a delivery service. For every N100,000 fake note I received, I would return her N50,000 in real money that I earned through the use of these fake bills. This scheme continued until I was caught.”
